Good to know
It is prudent to include the Serious Illnesses Guarantee as early as possible as part of your hospitalisation insurance. As once you have been diagnosed, it is no longer possible.
The Serious Illnesses Guarantee option is available from €0.30 per month. So, you will hardly feel the difference in your wallet. And the earlier you add the option onto your insurance, the less you pay.
Practical questions and answers
If you opted for the Serious Illnesses Guarantee and you find yourself affected by one of the 31 recognised illnesses, you can apply to receive the guarantee. Fill in the application form for an allocation of the Serious Illness Guarantee . Send it to us along with a recent medical certificate from your treating physician stating the nature of the illness and the date of your diagnosis. This can be done digitally via the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop), or in person at one of our offices. Once the medical advisor approves your application, treatment costs related to the illness will be reimbursed.
The medical adviser can only approve an application if the diagnosis was dated after you chose to be covered by the Guarantee. That is why it is important to subscribe as early as possible. The premium for it is deliberately set very low to keep the option as accessible as possible for everyone. You can purchase this Guarantee from as little as €0.30 per month. And the earlier you do this, the less you pay.
Download the most recent application form for the Serious Illness Guarantee. Fill it in, sign it and provide it to us along with a recent medical certificate from your treating physician stating the nature of the illness and the date of diagnosis. Apply a white adhesive stamp to the documents you do not submit digitally so that we can identify them immediately.
- Submit your documents digitally via the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop).
- Alternatively, deposit them in a Helan post box near you.
- You can also send them by post to Helan Independent Health Insurance Fund, Boomsesteenweg 5 in 2610 Wilrijk.
Please note! A certificate of care provided (a hardcopy doctor's note) may not be provided to us digitally. We need the original copy for the reimbursement of statutory health insurance.
Once the medical adviser approves your application, the treatment costs of the illness will be reimbursed.
If the medical adviser approves your application, the agreement remains valid for one year. This period will be extended by one year at a time, consecutive or not, for the same disease.
For the following six recognised major diseases, the agreement and any extensions will be granted immediately for a period of five years:
- Alzheimer's disease
- AIDS
- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- progressive muscular dystrophy
- mucoviscidosis
- scleroderma with organ involvement
To request an extension , a medical certificate from your treating physician showing that there are still expenses related to the disease is sufficient. To determine the start date of the agreement and extensions, a maximum of six months will be tracked back from the date of receipt of the application.
What are the terms and conditions?
The Guarantee cover starts the first day of the month after we receive your application for registration and your fully completed medical questionnaire. Unless you were already covered by a similar insurance policy for serious illnesses, a waiting period of six months from your registration date will apply. If you were already diagnosed with one of the recognised serious illnesses on the list before registering for the Guarantee, it will not be possible to request the Guarantee for that specific illness. However, the Guarantee will remain valid for the other recognised diseases.
Registration for the Serious Illnesses Guarantee is possible up to the age of 65. The same limit applies to hospitalisation insurance policies Hospitalia Medium and Hospitalia Plus. There is no applicable age limit for the Hospitalia hospitalisation policy. You can get it at any age.
Hospitalisation insurance policies Hospitalia, Hospitalia Medium and Hospitalia Plus are family health insurance policies. It is therefore mandatory to include everyone in your family, unless a family member already has similar hospitalisation insurance. When you add the Serious Illness Guarantee to your insurance, your whole family will be protected and each family member will be reimbursed for the treatment costs of a recognised serious illness.
