Do you need to prove that you are in order with Belgian mandatory health insurance during a doctor's visit while travelling? The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles you to a refund for unexpected medical care.
Conditions
The EHIC proves that you can be reimbursed for medical care abroad. This way, you only have to pay the patient fees (and possible supplements) yourself.
How to apply for a EHIC?
Having a EHIC is not compulsory. However, it does make the paperwork easier during your stay. You can apply for the card in different ways. You can obtain a digital EHIC on your smartphone, or you can apply for a paper version, both through My Helan.
What is the difference between the EHIC and Mediphone Assist?
- The EHIC proves that you are in order with legal health insurance. This card ensures the reimbursement of legal medical expenses.
- Mediphone Assist is an additional service provided by Helan. They assist you with advice, arrange repatriation or ensure reimbursement for urgent hospitalisation.
